PROSPERA DIGITAL

An mHealth program aimed at improving maternal and child health for Prospera beneficiaries through a personalized SMS one way and two way messaging system.

The goal is to measure health impacts attributable to the intervention. We evaluate the impact of providing adhoc information in general, but also, the differentiated impact of sending information with high socio-emotional content and format, as well as personalization.

Intervention period: pregnancy, labor, postpartum and first two years of the baby´s life.

Messages are sent for free and beneficiaries without a phone are provided with one.

WORLD OF BOOKS

The project seeks to improve reading scores for students enrolled in grades 1 to 3 by involving parents in their child’s reading and complementing it with an innovative technology-based tool (MATCH) that matches children with level-appropriate books in spanish, which meet their reading skills and their topics of interest.

The process involves:

– Creating a stock of books by level to be available in participating libraries within the communities.

– Providing children with access to a user-friendly tool that generates lists of recommended level-appropriate books.

– Providing information to parents of early grade children about their children’s reading abilities.

– Coaching parents on how to scaffold their children’s reading process and detect possible reading difficulties.

ADOPTION OF TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE

This project addresses the issue of how to achieve a better use of fertilizers and modern agricultural practices by small corn producers.

We measure the impact of:

  • Providing information about the chemical quality of soil.
  • Providing money to buy inputs.
  • Giving personalizaed recommendations vs general ones and favouring autonomy.

We found that agricultors use to much urea and use little of other fertilizers.

We show that personalized information on soil has small effects and that the lack of money to buy inputs is an important barrier. We didn´t find advantages on providing results on soil analysis; but we did find that allowing producers to choose their inputs generates persistence in the use of better practices.
